President of Slow Food
BACKGROUND / Academic and professional background.
Carlo Petrini was born in Bra (Italy) on the 22nd of June 1949. After his sociology studies in Trento and a background in politics and in associations, his interest in gastronomy grows in 1977, and he starts his collaboration with the major Italian newspapers.
At the beginning of the eighties, he founds the association “Arcigola” which aims to the valorisation of conviviality and to the promotion of quality food.
In 1989, in Paris, the International Slow Food Movement Manifesto is presented and signed by over twenty delegations from all over the world and Petrini is elected President of the movement.
In the years he defines a new idea of gastronomy which considers the food as the result of cultural, historical, economical and environmental processes. This process will also bring the movement to found, in 2004, the first University of Gastronomic Sciences in the world.

The objective of Slow Food is to create a network among the people involved in the food system who can start new virtuous initiatives in favor of their territory and of their inhabitants following a new paradigm which identifies food quality not only in the organoleptic characteristics of the product, but also in its environmental and social value.
