BACKGROUND / Academic and professional background
Diane Dufour, graduated from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in 1988, was the European Director of Magnum Photos from 2000 to 2006, she has curated a number of exhibitions including Euro Visions at the Centre Pompidou (2005) and The Image to Come at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris (2007). In 2010, she has created Le BAL where she has been curating a number of shows including Anonymes, l’Amérique sans nom: photographie et cinéma with David Campany (2010), Topographie de la guerre with Jean-Yves Jouannais (2011). Under her lead, LE BAL also turned into a major educative and experimental platform in the image field (“La Fabrique du Regard”).
ACHIEVEMENT/ What is your project, initiative, start-up, company all about?
Since 2008, the « Fabrique du Regard », educational platform of the BAL, leads a project with scholars coming from education action zone establishments. The objective is to train “eyes” because looking follows norms and needs tools to understand and decode, as citizens, the world we live in.
In 6 years, our unique programs have trained 8000 young people from 6 to 18 years-old, coming from 112 establishments and 13 educative authorities tanks to 300 art historians, researchers, graphic designers, journalists, iconographers, collectors and also to many professional structures such as galleries, editory house, bookstores, photo laboratory.

Paris and its region but also in the rest of France (13 regional education authorities: Paris Créteil Versailles, Lille, Amiens, Caen, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Roubaix)

The “Fabrique du regard” leads a citizen, social and political action. Its mission is to give the necessary tools, develop a critical sense on their environment, broaden the cultural, social and mental horizon of young people and give them the self-confidence they need, the self-esteem, fight against self-censorship and go beyond the speech difficulties.
The “fabrique” also faces social and environmental challenges by intervening more particularly in disadvantaged areas. Its challenge is also social and economic: it also work at the training and support of a new generation of artists.
