ACHIEVEMENT and IMPACT / What is the project/initiative/startup/company you will be presenting at the Positive Economy Forum all about ? What is the positive economic, social, political, environmental…of the activity, project, initiative, startup, company ?
I am an advocate for urban agriculture, and in specific, vertical farms and their role in establishing the eco-city. The idea of vertical farming first arose in a class I taught from 1999-2009.
LOCATION / In which city, country, part of the world do you conduct your activities ?
I travel extensively to all parts of the world. Some of my more memorable trips were to: Bhutan, Bangladesh, The Canary Islands, India, Cambodia, Patagonia, New Zealand.
IMPACT / What is the positive economic, social, political, environmental…of the activity, project, initiative, startup, company ?
Since 2010, there have been numerous vertical farms established in Japan (160), Korea, China, Taiwan (50), The Netherlands, and the United States (30). Urban agriculture, mostly greenhouses on top of commercial buildings such as supermarkets, has also dramatically increased in cities around the world. The concept of an eco-city must be founded on its ability to become self-sufficient. Producing its own food supply is central to this concept.
