Dr Jean-Martin Cohen Solal

General Delegate, Mutualité Française

BACKGROUND/ Academic and professional background

Doctor of medecine (Paris Necker) and graduate in Health Economics (Paris-Dauphine University), Jean-Martin Cohen Solal was General Delegate of the French Comity of Health Education (which became the National Institute of Health Education and Prevention – INPES). He’s the creator of the French famous campaign “One glass of alcohol is fine. Three glasses here are the damages.” He also had the responsability of several Health Ministers’ cabinets and led health consulting agencies. He participated in the creation of the NGO “Action against Hunger” and he was appointed expert for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the field of Public information and Health education. He joined the Mutualité Française in 1996 as Communication and information Director and became, in 2006, Deputy Director-General and Director-General from October 1st 2009 and June 30th 2013. He teaches too in Sciences Po Paris, he’s administrator of the Matmut and member of the Ofi-Mandats Supervision Board and Chairman of Viala.

ACHIEVEMENT/ What is your project, initiative, start-up, company all about?

Chaired by Étienne Caniard, the French Mutual insurance system National Federation (FNMF) represents almost every health mutual insurance and protects their interests. 6 out of 10 French persons are insured by a mutual insurance which is part of the Mutualité Française. These organizations are non-profit and don’t procede to risk selection. They have a real medical expertise and seek for social innovation through a network of 2500 institutions on the French territory. The Mutualité Française takes part of Health promotion and supports people autonomy.

The French Mutual insurance system National Federation (FNMF) wants to develop and keep strong the values of the mutual insurance system (solidarity, mutual aid, sharing, democracy). Its action has the goal to offer to all French citizens a high-quality health protection and a equity between all in health access. They fight against social inequities too.
