BACKGROUND / Academic and professional background

Finished career in the international steel trade and industry. Was specialized in start ups and reorganizations. Professional involvement in today’s society involves voluntary work for senior citizens, a historical society and a keen interest in the aspects and troubles of the underprivileged around the world.

ACHIEVEMENT/ What is your project/ initiative/startup/company all about?

Focus on Vision was founded in 2004 to offer a choice solution to the world’s growing problem of bad vision and a contribution to WHO’s Vision 2020 programme. A billion people around the world lack simple glasses. Focus on Vision developed the low cost Focusspec® which are infinitely adjustable by the end-user in the rural parts or the slum of the big cities of the world. It can improve eye sight for >90% in need of simple glasses.

LOCATION/ In which city, country, part of the world do you conduct your activities?

The Focusspec® is manufactured in two cities in the Netherlands (Europe): Gameren (parts production) and Veghel (assembly and packing).

IMPACT/ What is the positive economic, social, political, environmental…of the activity, project, initiative, start-up, company?

Those in need for simple glasses who receive or buy specs WHO/IAPB calculated that the GNP of emerging nations will rise by US$ 400 per annum.

Those born with myopia in Africa the child’s chance to be become a school dropout reaches almost 100%. World average of children born with myopia is 10%. With spectacles they will be able to finish their school and fully participate in society.

Taxi and truck drivers will able to see properly at distance with proper eyesight whilst driving and thus causing less traffic accidents.

People from middle age need reading glasses. No one excepted. With the rise of the world’s population and average age this need will only raise.
