João Proença

Secretary-General, UGT

Born in 1947, João Proença is the General Secretary of UGT since 1995.
From 1978 to 1995, he was the General Secretary of the Public Administration Workers’ Trade Union.
He is a Member of the Standing Committee for Social Dialogue (since its foundation in 1984), Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council and member of different Institutions and Organizations.
Moreover, he is the Vice-President of ETUC (European Trade Union Confederation), member of its Executive and Steering Committees, member of the General Council of ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), Executive Secretary of CSPLP (Trade Union Community for Portuguese Language-speaking Countries). He was granted the Order of Agricultural and Industrial Merit (Official) and the Order of Merit (Grand Cross).
João Proença was University Associate Professor in the Higher Technical Institute (1970-1980), elected member of the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Physics and Engineering Laboratory (1975-1976), Coordinator of the Information Secretariat for the National Strategic Plan, member of the Group that carried out the Technological Development Plan for the National Industry, and was at the Head of Cabinet of several members of the First Constitutional Government.
Graduated by the High Technical Institute (IST) in Chemical Engineering in 1970; in 1982 he was invited as an assistant Professor in IST and as a researcher to join the INETI (National Institute of Engineering, Technology and Innovation), to which he has belonged ever since.
