Socio-economist & researcher, CIRAD
Nicolas Bricas completed agricultural engineer’s training by trainings in economy of the development and in socio-anthropology of the food. After 6 years of commitment in search-action in NGOs to promote the local food productions in sub-Saharan Africa, he joined Cirad in 1989 where he was in charge of research programs on the food changes in the world.
He is responsible for a federative program of research on the sustainable urban food systems today
ACHIEVEMENT / What is your project, initiative, startup, company all about?
The Surfood program (Sustainable Urban Food Sytems) federate about twenty multidisciplinary research teams to accompany and follow-up urban food politics to contribute to the food safety of vulnerable populations and to develop more sustainable food systems of from an environmental, social, economic and cultural point of view.
LOCATION / In which city, country, part of the world do you conduct your activities?
Surfood has an international vocation but 5 cities are bringing under focus : Montpellier, Dakar, Rabat, Hanoi and Cali.
IMPACT / What is the positive economic, social, political, environmental… of the activity, project, initiative, startup, company?
The main impact of this program is the mobilization of about 80 researchers in economic and social sciences, in nutrition and sciences of food, in engineering of the recycling and in agronomy on sustainable urban food systems.
