Founder, Plastic Odyssey

BACKGROUND / Professional and educational background

After one year in « classes preparatoires aux grandes ecoles », Simon spent a year studying in London before entering the French merchant navy academy (ENSM). After having sailed on several merchant vessels he joined Brittany ferries as deck officer and engine officer. Passionate about finding solutions to environmental issues, he carried out several studies and projects on eco-friendly ships, CO2 emission reduction, circular economy and low technologies for developing countries. In 2016, he won the Green Tech Award initiated by the Ministry of the environment before founding the Plastic Odyssey NGO that aims to reduce oceans’ pollution by promoting plastic recycling solutions adapted to developing countries.

 

ACHIEVEMENT / What does the project/initiative/startup/company you will be presenting at the Positive Economy Forum consist of?

Plastic Odyssey aims at reducing ocean’s plastic pollution by tackling the problem at source. The idea is to develop low tech and open source systems, well adapted to developing countries, in order to foster social businesses and make plastics too valuable to enter the Ocean.

 

LOCATION / Where do you lead your project/company (city, region and country)?

The focus will be put on the most polluted continents, where waste management is a serious issue : Africa, Asia and latin America.

 

IMPACT / How do you evaluate the economic, social, politic and environmental impact of your project / action?

The impact is threefold:

- Environmental: by reducing ocean’s plastic pollution and limiting CO2 emission induced by oil extraction and refining

– Social: by fostering entrepreneurship and jobs based on recycling

– Sanitary: by avoiding proliferation of mosquitoes and bacterias in polluted areas
