Student at ENSM : merchant navy officer - master degree in nautical sciences and engineering
BACKGROUND / Professional and educational background:
After one year in « classes preparatoires aux grandes ecoles », I have spent a year studying in London before joining the French merchant navy academy. I have worked one year as deck officer and engine officer at Brittany ferries. I am passionate about finding solutions to all kind of issues, especially environmental ones. During my studies I took part in several projects to serve environmental causes beginning with soap recycling for Moroccan children up to designing eco-friendly ships or building low tech fresh water generator for developing countries.
ACHIEVEMENT / What does the project/initiative/startup/company you will be presenting at the Positive Economy Forum consist of?
I am writing a paper on shipping CO2 emissions reduction using on-board micro-algae. Cultivated in bioreactors, micro-algae are one of the most efficient way of harvesting CO2 while being a potential alternative to heavy fuels used on ships.
LOCATION / Where do you lead your project/company (city, region and country)?
My paper will have an international impact as it will be presented during COP22 as part of the POC challenge, launched by the Ocean and Climate platform.
IMPACT / How do you evaluate the economic, social, politic and environmental impact of your project / action?
Shipping CO2 emissions have reached 1120 billions of kilograms in 2007 according to OMI, it means 4,5 % of total emissions. Currently, no solutions exist on ships to reduce these emissions. Micro-algae are a promising technology that could make it possible, thus helping solving this environmental issue.
