BACKGROUND / Professional and educational background:
Sophie Beau is directing humanitarian and social programs for about twenty years. After studying Anthropology and Political Science, she coordinated humanitarian missions in the field (Africa, Asia, Middle East, Caucasus) and in the headquarters of several NGOs. She directed programs against social exclusion in France and conducted a consultant activity in the local and international aid sector. She co-founded the European Association for Sea Rescue in the Mediterranean SOS MEDITERRANEE after meeting with Merchant Marine Captain Klaus Vogel in the beginning of 2015.
ACHIEVEMENT / What does the project/initiative/startup/company you will be presenting at the Positive Economy Forum consist of?
SOS MEDITERRANEE is an initiative of the civil society with the objectives to save the lives of migrants in distress in the Mediterranean through rescue operations, to provide protection and bare witness of their situation.
LOCATION / Where do you lead your project/company (city, region and country)?
The Search and Rescue operations take place in the Mediterranean Sea, in the international waters off the coasts of Libya and Italy. The awareness and mobilization campaign mostly involves the civil society of 3 European countries where the association is established: Germany, France and Italy.
IMPACT / How do you evaluate the economic, social, politic and environmental impact of your project / action?
In 4 months of Search And Rescue campaign at sea, the Aquarius, the rescue ship chartered by SOS MEDITERRANEE, welcomed more than 4,000 people on board. This is the result of an exceptional mobilization of the civil society (donations, volunteering, networking).
