Xavier Emmanuelli

Founding President, Samusocial International

BACKGROUND / Academic and professional background

Dr. Xavier Emmanuelli is an anesthesiologist who dedicated his life to people excluded from society.
In 1971 he co-founded Médecins Sans Frontières, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
After serving as Secretary of State for Emergency Humanitarian Aid in 1995-97, Dr. Xavier Emmanuelli created in 1993 the Samu Social de Paris, and in 1998 the Samu Social International, based on the concept of social emergency.
Dr. Emmanuelli chairs the “Haut Comité pour le Logement des Personnes Défavorisées” (National High Committee for the housing of people in need). He also helps the endowment fund of the Paris Bar (“Barreau de Paris Solidarité”).
He is the author of several books and novels and is Commander of the National Order of the Legion of Honour and Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit.

ACHIEVEMENT/ What is your project, initiative, start-up, company all about?

Since 1998, Samusocial International works to fight against social exclusion in all its forms and in all countries, and supports the creation and development of aid schemes Samusocial in the world’s major cities. All Samusocial organisations adhere to common principles, set out in a Charter and Professional Code of Conduct, and share an intervention method created by his founder doctor Xavier Emmanuelli.

Its network currently consists of 14 organisations (seven of which are specialised in the problems of street children and youth).
